TOEFL [Test of English as a Foreign Language]

TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to understand and use American English. The TOEFL test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location.

TOEFL IBT (internet based test)
The IBT test version is very different from the CBT and PBT versions and reflects a deeper understanding of English by combining all four basic communication skills. This new test replaces the earlier computer-based test TOEFL ® CBT. The next generation test assesses proficiency in the four language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important changes in the test are:

• Speaking skills are evaluated. The part of structure has been done away with.
• Some tasks involve integrated skills, such as reading-listening-writing.
• Knowledge of grammar is not tested separately but, is assessed indirectly throughout the test.

The TOEFL ® Internet-based test has four sections. It is approximately four hours long. All four sections can be taken on one day. Note-taking is allowed throughout the test to help test takers answer the questions.

• Reading - 60-100 minutes
  -- Three to five academic reading passages followed by comprehension questions
• Listening - 60-90 minutes
  --  Two conversations that include two or more speakers in each
  --  Four lectures, which include classroom dialogue
• Speaking - 20 minutes 
  -- 6 questions, where you have to speak about something you have heard or read.
• Writing - 50 minutes.
  -- Two writing tasks, one involves reading and listening.
  -- Total - 120 marks

- The writing and speaking tests of IBT are a bit tougher compared to IELTS.
